INDIANAPOLIS - Seton Hall University student-athletes continue to make the grade as evidenced by the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores the NCAA announced on Wednesday. All 14 varsity programs achieved four-year APR scores higher than the national average of 979, and six of the 14 programs achieved perfect scores of 1000.

As a department, Seton Hall’s multi-year average APR across all sports for the 2014-15 year is 993.6, which is the highest in Pirates history. Of the 14 teams, 10 of them either set a new program record for multi-year APR or matched a previous high.

“I’d like to extend a congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff for all their hard work in making academic success the priority and the norm here at Seton Hall,” Seton Hall Vice President & Director of Athletics and Recreation Pat Lyons said. “The latest NCAA APR scores show that our excelling student-athletes are not only performing at a high level in the classroom, but they are also proving to be leaders among their peers.

“With our record-high GPA, our high rate of Dean’s List honorees and the job opportunities our student-athletes have been able to garner upon graduation, it is clear that you can earn a great education and participate at the highest level of collegiate athletics here at Seton Hall University.”

The same six programs that were recognized last week for receiving the NCAA APR Public Recognition Award — baseball, men’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, softball and women’s tennis — produced the perfect 1000 scores.
  • Baseball now has sported a perfect multi-year score of 1000 three consecutive years and is 30 points above the national average of all Div. I baseball teams (970). Seton Hall is one of only 14 Div. I schools with a baseball program scoring a 1000 this year.
  • Men’s basketball achieved its first-ever multi-year APR of 1000 and is 36 points above the Div. I men’s basketball average score of 964. Seton Hall is one of only 18 school Div. I schools with a men’s basketball program to score 1000 this year.
  • Women’s cross country now has back-to-back perfect multi-year APRs of 1000 and is 14 points above the national average of 986.
  • Women’s golf has reached 1000 in all five multi-year APR reports of the program’s existence and is 11 points higher than the national women’s golf average of 989.
  • Softball and women’s tennis have both now recorded four consecutive multi-year APR scores of 1000. Softball, one of only 31 Div. I teams to score 1000 this year, is 19 points above the national average for its sport (981) and women’s tennis is 15 points above (985).

While those six sports achieved the highest possible score, the other eight varsity programs at Seton Hall also achieved multi-year APR scores above the national average of its respective sports:
  • Men’s cross country’s APR of 992 is an all-time program high and is 15 points above the national average of 977.
  • Men’s golf’s score of 990 is seven points better than the national average of 983.
  • Men’s soccer’s 985 APR score is a program best and is 11 points higher than the national average of 974.
  • Men’s swimming & diving’s score of 983 is the highest in program history and is three points better than the national average of 980.
  • Women’s basketball’s APR score of 982 is four points higher than the national average of 978.
  • Women’s soccer’s 992 APR score ranks eight points better than the national average of 984.
  • Women’s swimming & diving’s APR score of 997 is tied for the highest in team history and is seven points better than the national average of 990.
  • Volleyball’s 989 APR score is five points better than the national average of 984.

Rates are an average of each school’s performance for the last four years. National aggregates are based on all teams with usable data at the time of analysis. APRs for each team, lists of teams receiving public recognition and those receiving sanctions are available online through the NCAA’s searchable database.

“Division I student-athletes learn to balance playing a sport they love with the pursuit of a degree, and we honor their continued success in the classroom. The APR data prove that students can achieve both academically and athletically,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said. “Supporting our students as they work toward graduation is a top priority of everyone involved in college athletics.”

A leader among its peers in academic success, Seton Hall's excellence in the classroom is evidenced by the department's commitment to resources and the student-athletes' commitment to placing a high value on their education. Seton Hall supports its student-athletes with outstanding mentoring and tutoring, led by the Academic Support Services staff, and offers its student-athletes a state-of-the-art learning environment in the Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence, which was built less than two years ago and offers a main study area, group meeting spaces and private tutoring rooms.

The Pirates have responded with once again breaking a department record for highest grade-point averages. After the Fall 2015 semester, Seton Hall student-athletes had an all-time high 3.353 cumulative GPA, which came after achieving a 3.380 GPA as a collective during the fall. Individually, 141 Pirates, or 58 percent of the student-athlete population, earned Dean's List recognition.
